Rivers State, the host of the corporate headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has ranked first among the beneficiaries of the commission’s projects.

The NDDC portal showed yesterday that the commission has 3,570 projects in Rivers while Cross Rivers had the least projects with 624.

The commission drew the attention of members of the public to a comprehensive list of projects on its website.

Rivers is followed in the ranking by Delta State where the commission has 3,004 projects and Akwa Ibom State with 1,870 projects.

Bayelsa State, where oil was first discovered in commercial quantity, came fourth with 1,411 projects followed by Imo, 1,227; Ondo, 1,095; Edo, 1,056 and Abia, 884.

The chart further showed that the commission had 50 regional projects and five at its headquarters.

The portal did not, however, disclose how many of the projects were completed, ongoing or abandoned in the various states.

But it stated that road and bridges were the highest with 6,119 followed by electricity, 2,412; buildings, 2,412 and water supply, 1,627.

Others are consultancy, 526; reclamation and shore protection, 329; desilting 235; jetty 182, canalisation, 91; equipment, 69; supply, 56; furnishing, 33; dredging, 24; ICT, 12; programme 8 and design 5.

The commission had through a statement by its Director, Corporate Affairs, Dr. Ibitoye Abosede, said the NDDC portal contained a comprehensive list of all the projects of the commission from inception.

The statement said: “The NDDC is aware of an increasing need to be seen to be more accountable to the public and to conduct its affairs transparently.

“Entrenching the concept of accountability and transparency in its activities forms a part of the thrust of the new leadership embodied in the Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Obong Umana Okon Umana.

“To meet its expectations and actualise this vision, the NDDC wishes to inform the public of the existence of a project database on its website.”

The commission urged members of the public to access the website to know the NDDC projects, activities and programmes across the Niger Delta.
