Pugilist  Elizabeth Oshoba yesterday  advanced to the quarterfinal stages quarterfinal of the Women’s 54kg-57kg Featherweight Boxing event as the 2022 Commonwealth Games continues in Birmingham. The 22-year-old Nigerian beat New Zealand’s Erin Walsh 5-0 in the round 16 of women’s featherweight.

Also in the women’s middleweight category,  Jacinta Umunnakwe has qualified to the semifinal even without entering the ring .

She walked over her opponent after Tonga’s Mele Ula  reportedly failed to make it to Birmingham for the quarter final bout.

But Team Nigeria  was not that lucky in the  Men’s Light Middleweight category  after  Azeez Osoba failed to advance to the quarterfinal, losing  by points in the round of 16.

The 2019 African Games silver medalist was outboxed by Wales’ Garan Croft in an encounter that ended 5-0 in favour of the European. The Welsh was awarded the three rounds by the judges to put an end to Osoba’s dream of a medal after knocking out his Bahamas opponent in the first round of the

Yet  attention  of Nigerians  would be focussed  at the NEC Arena  today when  Adeyinka Benson returns  to the ring in the men’s middleweight bout as he takes on Scotland’s Sam Hickey in the quarterfinal fight.

Similarly, Yetunde Egunjobi will begin her campaign in the women’s light flyweight when she confronts England’s Savannah Stubley in the quarterfinal.
