PEOPLE ARE FREE TO PROTEST ANYTIME – LAURA MITI

As she writes:
The Minister of Home Affairs made a disturbing statement about citizen protests he says are being planned during the AU summit.

Mr. Mwinbu said something to the effect of “we know there are unscrupulous individuals planning to carry out illegalities. ” He added the – those found wanting will be dealt with – threat that brings an overwhelming sense of deja vu.

Look Minister Mwimbu, it’s like this – you have one responsibility when you hear of planned protests, which we would expect you heard of because citizens have notified the police of their intention to gather. That responsibility is to find out if the police are ready to facilitate the protests, to ensure they are peaceful and orderly.

Now you might be convinced that there is nothing to protest to the AU about. Well, unfortunately, that is not your call. People are free to protest against June coming every year, if they want. Or that the Bembas have failed in their duty to reduce the monkey population harassing tourists in Livingstone. They can protest because they have no water, or loans for university. It’s not yours or the police’s business to say what citizens can protest against or when.

You leave it to the public to decide that an issue is not making much sense – remember Bowman Lusambo.

So, no, let us not go back to threatening citizens for exercising their rights. Let citizens do their thing and the police theirs – which is to ensure that any protesters abide by the law.
