Gunmen have killed seven security guards in a community in Imo State.

The Nation learnt that the assailants invaded Umuafom in Owerri West council at about 9.30pm on Monday, taking the guards on duty unawares.

A source said: “Four of the guards were shot dead at a building close to a hospital, while the other three were shot at a new building near Corpers Lodge. Two others also fell victim to the gunmen while trying to run for safety.

“One of the victims was shot in the leg and his bike taken away.”

Police spokesman Michael Abattam confirmed the incident, but said he could not ascertain yet if those killed were security guards.

Abattam said the police were on the trail of the gunmen.

Also, three suspects said to be notorious armed robbers have been arrested in the state.

The suspects specialise in robbing victims residing in highbrow areas, police said.
